This thesis reviews the analytical determination by liquid chromatography of different
antibiotic groups in biological samples.
The analysis of antibiotics is important due to regulatory and public attention to
exposure risk of antibiotics, as well as veterinary applications or residual waters. Results
showed that their determination is mostly obtained by HPLC, using C18 columns, excluding
glycopeptides due to their lack of chromophore groups.
Common mobile phases are water, acetonitrile and methanol, among others like
ammonium acetate or ammonium formate. Average retention times of these analyses are
run 20-30min with column temperatures from 15-45ºC and injection volumes of 10-20µL.
Detection is resulted by UV using wavelengths from 300 to 400nm generally, as well as
MS/MS detection in positive mode, excluding glycopeptides where fluorescence detection
was noticed.
Finally, results have shown CV(%) and RSD(%) below 20%, recoveries under acceptable
limits, 65-100%. LODs and LOQs exhibited ranges of ng/L, resulting into an adequate
analysis of antibiotic.
In conclusion, management and control of antibiotics has to be established in the future,
in order to set and obtain on-line detection protocols for unknown metabolites and the
transformation products of antibiotics in population or veterinary samples, as well as
environmental samples. [-]
