With the adoption of the European Regulation Nº 517/2014, commonly referred as F-Gas,
the use of refrigerants with high levels of contamination (GWP) is highly limited as they are
greatly responsible of the Global Warming. Most of the refrigerants currently used in
commercial refrigeration belong to that group of fluids, being the R404A one of the most
used. This situation makes obligatory the search for alternatives to this fluid that fulfil with
the technical, environmental and economic requirements currently demanded by the
industry.
In this End-of-degree project the refrigerants R152a, R290, R454A, R454B, R454C,
R455A, R457A, R459B and R516A are analysed from a theoretical perspective as future
alternatives to the R404A. In addition, it is conducted an experimental analysis of the
R454C in a stand-alone commercial cabinet for fresh product originally designed for
R404A, whose charge is optimized in order to reduce to the maximum the charge of
refrigerant.
Finally, it is introduced an analysis of the economic and environmental feasibility of the
suggested modifications in the installation with the R454C. [-]
