This proposed study is the beginning of an investigation project settled in the
category of gender. In this case, I have chosen to analyze this matter from the
mythological perspective, without omitting any mythological connection to ancient
Greece society.
This Final Grade Project has been named as Mythology as a starting point. A
reflection on the image of women in the Greek Myth. In the project, the Greek Myth and
its categorization of the female figure are going to be studied. For this reason, the
starting point will be an analysis of the ancient period to ascertain common aspects of
both elements. Some authors such as Carlos García Gual define the myth from a
fantastic mainstream, making reference to «some extraordinary figures located in a
remote and prestigious time» (García Gual, 1999: 19) and suggesting that myths are
only linked to unreal matters and they are not connected to reality. Via this study, I
pretend to prove the relation between them, because as it will be analyzed, some
characteristics of ancient society are conditioning and determining on myths, such as the
study of gender and the concept of feminine gender at this historic period. About the
second issue, I have tried to analyze the image of women in myths and after some
tracking and a following reflection, I have concluded that in the majority of cases
feminine figures can be split up into two different categories. On one side, we can
distinguish the role of the woman as a «victim» and on the other side as an «evil
woman». In both categories, feminine figures are seen as negative contrasting with men
who are usually superior to them.
Once the two most relevant aspects of the project have been exposed, it has to be
said that this study has been chosen due to my personal interest in this topic. The
historic subject matters are related to the History and Heritage Grade that I finished last
year. I learnt how to love history, especially a period highly related to Greek mythology.
Moreover, the mythological field has been present at every project during all my
university years. Finally, the subject Gender Philosophies has helped me to learn more
about this unknown subject for me so far and it has been gender implementation to any
category what has made me reflect about the possibility to study those concepts in an
ancient area such as the mythological one.
To carry out this study of bibliographic revision and investigation, the following
objectives have been established: The first aim consists in studying the correspondence that is acquired by women
feminine roles in the myths based on the historic and social context in which they
coexisted. This context, with a patriarchal system, shapes a misogynous mythology full
of sexist messages. It underestimates women repetitively, annulling them or showing
the wicked side that «supposedly we as women have». The second objective is showing
the negative concept of the feminine figure highlighting the role of women «victim» or
«devils» in the myths. The main purpose consists in the analysis of one of these two
concepts, taking as an example the figure of Europe and consequently verifying through
a simple figure, relevant results that can support a more exhaustive study about the
topic.
Concerning the structure or followed working plan, I have chosen three different
blocks to determine the topic to be studied:
The first block, Patriarchal Society in Ancient Greece will help us to shape the
social context in which myths were set. In this block, the figure of the woman is
investigated and her restrictions in Greek society in public and private contexts. One
this analysis has been done; the extracted results will be compared to mythology, being
able to observe the same patriarchal and dominating essence present at Ancient Greece.
The second section, Gender Philosophy: the different roles of woman in the Greek Myth
will be used to sort out the feminine figure of the myths into two different categories:
one of them will be about the study of the general model of the woman as a «victim»
and the other will analyze the woman seen as «frightening or wicked», because both of
them are the two general models which can be observed in the myths. Finally, the third
section will be set around the Exemplification of Sexual Violence in Mythology. In this
area, we will see the implementation of some of the theoretical concepts studied
previously with the analysis of the figure of Europe and the mythological abduction that
she suffered. As a final synthesis, it is constructive in the conclusion the exposition of
some possible future researching lines that have been generated due to the study of this
topic with the objective of very interesting new questions for the researching
community.
About research sources of the topic, there is a big quantity of information about
Ancient Greece, mythology and gender. Many works deal about these three topics but in
an independent way. For this reason, the most of bibliographic resources that have been
used are different
In the first section, overall the most significant bibliography is focused on
specialized books or articles about this historic period. Some of the most relevant books
in the project have been: Love and Sex in ancient Greece by Juan Eslava Galán, the
manual of Ancient History of Greece and Rome that was coordinated by Fco. Javier
Fernández Nieto; Goddesses, Harlots, Wives and Slaves and Ancient Greece: political,
social and cultural History by Sara B. Pomeroy. About the articles that have been
studied I can emphasize «Woman’s hereditary Transmission in classic Greece» by Jesús
Daniel Cepeda Ruiz and «Some Remarks on Woman’s Conditions in ancient Greece»
by Paula Fuentes Santibáñez.
For the second chapter some documents have been very useful such as the article
«Gender Duality in the Greek Myth: the Case of the feminine God» by Jorge David
Fernández Gómez, the doctoral dissertation Myth and Gender in ancient Greece.
Tantalides, Labdacides and Dardanides by Iván Pérez Miranda and Final Master
Project Constructions and strengthened feminine stereotypes from classic Mythology:
the cases of Aphrodite, Hera and Athenea. However, the most useful article to establish
the categories of myths has been «Terrible Women (Heroines of Greek Mythology)» by
Alicia Esteban Santos.
For the last section of the project, apart from the required classical resources to
analyze the abduction of Europe, we can emphasize the lecture «Abduction in Classical
Mythology» by Assela Alamillo that was taught in the 10th Seminar of Classical
Archaeology, the article «The Abduction: a way of love? An interpretation of
prosecution and kidnapping images of Dionysius and Ariadne» by professor Pilar Díez
del Corral which was published in the investigation journal Gallaecia or the book
Gender Violence in ancient time by María Dolors Molas Font and others.
With all this set of bibliography and the compilation of extra information that it is
not mentioned due to lack of space, I have been able to observe how there is a fail about
a global study about the elements that I am going to analyse in the project. This fact
encourages me to follow on my investigations about the topic. [-]
