Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS) characterized by demyelinating lesions in the brain and spinal cord. One of the most common and disabling symptoms of the disease is cognitive deficit. Commonly, the speed of information processing, learning and memory, and executive functions represent the cognitive functions most affected during the MS development. These deficits, together with depression and fatigue, have a great negative impact on the performance of daily living activities and, consequently, on the quality of the patients’ life. Therefore, it is important to investigate which type of treatments are most effective. In this paper, we review the most relevant research on the cognitive rehabilitation of MS in the last five years. Recently, neuroimaging techniques have been applied to examine changes following cognitive intervention. It appears that all those patients who have undergone rehabilitation have an increase in cerebral connectivity. Findings on the efficacy of cognitive therapy in MS are favorable, however, no definite conclusions can be drawn, largely due to the lack of methodological rigor of the studies. In future researches, they should have larger and more homogeneous samples, incorporate a control group with healthy participants, and assess behavioral, emotional, and cerebral and quality of life changes in MS patients.
