El fenómeno Oprah: estudio de cómo Oprah Winfrey catapulta a las escritoras afroamericanas

Abstract

Una de las cuestiones más recurrentes en los últimos años es la de cómo acercar el feminismo al grueso de la población y especialmente a la mujer afroamericana. Es por ello que el presente Trabajo Final de Máster pretende un acercamiento, desde una perspectiva de género, a cómo la popular presentadora estadounidense de origen humilde ha catapultado en su programa a las autoras afroamericanas y su escritura femenina y feminista. Por ello, este estudio se centra en la figura de dos grandes escritoras afroamericanas del siglo XX: Maya Angelou y Toni Morrison, cuya obra literaria Oprah consiguió llevar al estrellato gracias a la participación de éstas en “Oprah’s Book Club”. Para concluir, este trabajo abre la posibilidad de realizar, por un lado, un futuro estudio que investigue la incidencia de los debates literarios televisivos a la hora de fomentar la lectura entre el estudiantado; y por otro lado, averiguar hasta qué punto sería posible realizar un programa literario en España que alcanzase la repercusión que Oprah Winfrey ha conseguido a lo largo de los años en Estados Unidos.

One of the most recurrent issues in recent years is how to bring feminism closer to the bulk of the population and, especially, to the African-American women. For this reason, this MA dissertation attempts an approach, from the perspective of gender, to the figure of Oprah Winfrey and how the popular American presenter has put African- American writers and their feminine and feminist work in the limelight on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. Thus, this study focuses on two great African-American writers of the twentieth century: Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison, whose literary work Oprah managed to lead to stardom thanks to their participation in “Oprah’s Book Club”. To conclude, this dissertation opens the possibility of carrying out, on the one hand, a future study which would investigate the incidence of televised literary debates in the promotion of reading amongst students. And, on the other hand, to find out to what extent it would be possible to create a literary talk show in Spain that would reach the impact that Oprah Winfrey has achieved over the years in the United States.
