Introduction: Previous studies reported phenotypic differences in human pigmentation and solar sensitivity between sexes. Part of these differences are not only due to physiological/behavioral reasons, also to genetic effects. The objective of the present study is to determine if there are differences between sexes in a Spanish population.
Methodology: Data were collected from 152 females and 152 males of Spanish origin in order to analyze if there are phenotypic differences, and if these differences were influenced by the genotype. For this, some pigmentary characteristics were obtained and the genotype of 10 polymorphisms (SNPs) as well as RHC variants of the MC1R gene were determined.
Results: We found phenotypic differences between sexes in ephelides (P = 0.011) and skin color (P = 0.017). When we studied the genetic causes that determine these differences, we found that there are genetic effects associated with sex. IRF4 and MC1R tend to maintain significance and increase the risk in females compared to males (P = 4.00x10-3 and P = 5.00x10-6 respectively).
Conclusion: The results of this study show that there are phenotypic differences between sexes and, equally importantly, that these differences are determined by genetic effects and not only by physiological/behavioral reasons. [-]
