Motivación maternal. Un nuevo test conductual para el análisis de la conducta maternal motivada en roedores

Abstract

Maternal behavior ensures nutrition, shelter and protection of the offspring at the cost of a great investment of energy, taking risk and confrontation to adverse situations by mothers. This implies an enormous maternal motivation. It is surprising, then, that in standard tests of maternal behavior mouse virgin females are almost indistinguishable from mothers. Motivated pup retrieval test aims to evaluate not only the motor aspects of maternal behavior, but also, the motivation of the female to the offspring that should differ between mothers and non-mothers. In this test, the female must safeguard the pups in the nest, overcoming an obstacle - a barrier of 10 cm - with the pups in the mouth, which involves a huge effort. Only animals with high level of motivation to recover the offspring will perform the task. Applying this test to three groups of females (mothers, godmothers and virgins), only mothers were able to perform the task. This demonstrates that, during gestation and lactation, the neuroendocrine changes in mothers increase their motivation to face the arduous task of motherhood.

El comportamiento maternal asegura nutrición, abrigo y protección a la descendencia a costa de una gran inversión de energía, asunción riesgos y enfrentamiento a situaciones adversas por la madre. Ello implica una enrome motivación materna. Por eso sorprende que en tests estándar de conducta maternal las hembras vírgenes de ratón sean casi indistinguibles de las madres. El test de pup retrieval motivado, pretende evaluar no sólo aspectos motores de la conducta maternal, sino otros más importantes pero difíciles de evaluar, como la motivación de la hembra hacia las crías que debe diferir entre madres y no madres. En este test, la hembra debe salvaguardar a las crías en el nido, superando un obstáculo – una barrera de 10 cm- con las crías en la boca, lo que implica un enorme esfuerzo. Con ello, sólo animales con un alto grado de motivación por recuperar a las crías realizarán la tarea. Aplicando este test a tres grupos de hembras (madres, comadres y vírgenes), solo las madres eran capaces de realizar la tarea. Esto demuestra que, durante la gestación y lactancia, los cambios neuroendocrinos en la madre incrementan su motivación para hacer frente a la ardua tarea de la maternidad.
