Toni Morrison, a renowned African-American writer, is fighting against injustices of all sorts that affect her race. She attempts during all her literary career to state that Black Is Beauty unveiling the thruth about African-American population in the US. Her voice has been raised to defend African-Americans’rights. Moreover, she is interested in limning African-American women. In addition, she used her novels and essays to verbalise their racial identity. For instance, her novel The Bluest Eye chosen to work on in this dissertation reflects perfectly Toni Morrison’s position as a writer and as a human being. Portraying African-American women characters in the novel she explains why many of them have developed a sense of self-loathing. Thus, Pecola, the main character of the novel represents the weakest part of the Black population who internalises the racial hatred that leads her step by step to self-destruction. Rejected by her parents, violated by her drunken father she escapes from a sad reality in her obsession with “whiteness”. Nevertheless, there are more feminine characters in The Bluest Eye that give readers another view on African-American women. Claudia, the narrator, or her mother Mrs. McTeer, symbolise the strength and courage Black women possess to face all kind of adversities in their lives. Their everyday struggle is exhibited in their perseverance to preserve a racial identity. [-]
