Receptividad a la charlatanería pseudo-filosófica y factor G de inteligencia

Abstract

Este trabajo es un estudio empírico sobre la receptividad al bullshit o charlatanería pseudofilosófica y su relación con las habilidades cognitivas generales, o el factor g de inteligencia. Se trata de una réplica del estudio de Pennycock, Cheyne, Barr, Koehler y Fugelsang (2015). Primero se introduce el concepto de bullshit desde las aproximaciones de distintos autores, señalando aspectos relevantes sobre su producción y los distintos factores que pueden subyacer a la receptividad hacia el mismo, explicando también las principales conclusiones de la investigación de Pennycock et al (2015). A continuación, la explicación de la metodología empleada, describiendo las características de la muestra, los materiales utilizados y los análisis estadísticos posteriores. Se aplicó la correlación de Pearson para hallar la dependencia entre ambos. No se pudo confirmar la hipótesis planteada, pero los datos apuntaban en la dirección marcada por el anterior estudio (que utilizó los mismos instrumentos de medida), a mayor puntuación en el factor g, menor tendencia a la receptividad al bullshit. Los posibles factores que puedan ayudar a dar una explicación sobre esta falta de significación son discutidos también, además de la propuesta de nuevas líneas de investigación futuras, tanto para replicar el estudio de estas dos variables como la propuesta de estudio de otros factores relacionados también con el bullshit.

This dissertation is an empiric research about receptivity to pseudo-profound bullshit and its relationship with the general cognitive abilities or g factor. This is a replica of the study of Pennycock, Cheyne, Barr, Koehler y Fugelsang (2015). Firstly, the concept of bullshit is introduced from the approaches provided by different authors, pointing out the relevant aspects about its production and the different facts that may lie behind it, explaining as well the main conclusions of the research by Pennycock et al. (2015). Then, the methodology used to carry it out will be explained describing the characteristics of the sample, the materials employed and the posterior statistic analysis. Pearson’s correlation has been used in order to find out any correlation between both of them. The hypothesis in question could not be confirmed, but the collected data suggested a weak correlation in the direction previously marked by the former research (which used the same measure instruments) that indicated that the more g factor score, the less tendency to believe bullshit to have a deep meaning. In addition, the possible factors that may help to explain this lack of significance are discussed too, along with the proposal of future directions of research, in order to replicate the study of these two variables as much as to study other factors related to bullshit.
