After analyzing the mutual relationship and influence between the roles that have
assigned to each gender throughout history and the domestic space that have
ascribed to women, the work focuses, first of all, on the dialectic between
architectural space and family, with a spatial approach to womanless houses, that is
to say to urban and architectural consequences and repercussions of the evolution of
new family structures in the contemporary world and the issues related to the (desand
/ or re-) location of care tasks. Some models of housing and spatial
configurations are briefly analyzed, limiting the study to the specific case of the
evolution of spatial storage systems and strategies between the 19th and 21st
centuries. Storage spaces become a pretext to study the present and the current
situation, and to wonder, looking ahead into the future, whether or not it still makes
sense to speak of housing units as city makers (or rather it would be better to
consider them as space-time entities, and hence eminently mental units, insofar as
our lifestyles become more and more nomadic), whether family or the individual is
still worth to be placed as a reference point for domestic space, and, concluding,
whether there are new models of domesticity, family and (homeless) women or the
mere fact of speaking of models is already anachronistic. Secondly, using a gender
sensitive approach, not only as an analytical-descriptive category but rather as a
critical attitude ―which broadens the viewpoint on the relationship between (the body
of) women and spatial (both domestic and urban, physical and mental)
environments— new frontiers of domesticity are investigated and some guidelines
and strategies are proposed with which to elaborate a new theoretical-practical
framework for the design of the domestic spaces. [-]
