A study and a proposal of new markets for Bergé Marítima

Abstract

The shipping industry deals with the commercial transportation of goods around the world. Bergé Marítima is a Spanish company founded in Bilbao with offices throughout Spain and dedicated to shipping activities The company has a good reputation in the domestic market; however, Bergé’s office in Castellón trades with a number of customers which is lower than expected. Furthermore, Bergé has to face a considerable amount of competitors. In order to analyse its weaknesses, this Master Thesis considers different aspects such as the shipping industry, the international, national and local competition, the international maritime agreements and a SWOT analysis of the company. With the purpose of proposing new markets, a survey is carried out to find out the economic sector in Castellón that has the highest demand for import and export maritime activities and resources. Once both the company’ weaknesses and the main economic sector in the area have been identified, a research of new markets has been undertaken. Three countries which are rich in the natural resources most demanded in Castellón are analysed in depth to have a better knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages that future business relationships with them may provide to Bergé Marítima.
