dc.description.abstract | During the last decades, the concept of solitude has been articulated by the feminist discourse as an integrating process for women, driving them towards self-analysis beyond gender constructions (Lagarde, 2012). However, to Anna Morgan –the main character in Jean Rhys’ Voyage in the Dark (1934) – the solitude experienced in her hotel rooms is perceived as alienating and fragmentary. It is the point of this paper to show that in order to understand solitude as a constituent element of women’s autonomy it is necessary for them to have a place to identify with. As a result, the settings in Rhys’ novel, characterized by their impersonal and in-between status and which Marc Augé calls non-places, prevent Anna from using solitude to analyze and articulate her subjectivity. Moreover, her economic dependence from men hampers her ability to understand solitude as a fertile and autonomous space. | ca_CA |
| ca_CA |
