The aim of this Bachelor’s Degree Final Project is to overview the major approaches and methods
for foreign language teaching in the twentieth century in order to analyse why there exists no
success in most of the Spanish foreign language classrooms throughout Primary Education and
propose a foreign language approach derived both from this methodological knowledge and
analysis.
This Final Project also aims to strengthen the confidence of both teachers and learners along the
foreign language process by clearly characterising the main issues an approach to foreign
language acquisition should possess so that basic accurate oral skills are acquired at the end of
the Primary school. By intense and regular exposure to the language, this proposal impels learners
to listen to sounds in order to sharpen their sense of hearing and achieve native-like intonation.
Consequent babbling would entail the recognition of phonemes to progressively match them with
their graphemes thanks to the phoneme chart. Therefore, dyslexia and other problems related to
literacy are prevented. The last phase of this oral approach to foreign language teaching claims to
match these sound patterns with their meaning by means of appropriate contextualization.
It is to be mentioned that the challenging period that we witness nowadays should make Primary
school foreign language teachers aware of the importance of English language acquisition for
Primary children as an indispensable tool for social and professional twenty-first century
opportunities. [-]
