Rescuing the Last Grains of Truth: On Metacinematic Elements in The Idiots

Abstract

El recurso a lo metacinematográfico en los cines que se alejan del modelo hegemónico propicia en el espectador la reflexión en torno a su papel con respecto al film y le plantea cuestiones en torno al propio medio cinematográfico, la realidad y la relación que se establece entre ambos. Nuestro escrito se centrará en el análisis de los gestos autorreflexivos y metafílmicos presentes en Los idiotas (Dogme #2. Idioterne, Lars von Trier, 1998) que contribuyan a arrojar cierta luz sobre la posición del film frente a estas cuestiones. Para ello, nos dedicaremos en un primer momento al análisis del relato acercándonos a los trasvases que tienen lugar entre los tres niveles ontológicos permeables que el film nos presenta. Posteriormente, la reflexión en torno al discurso del film partirá del diálogo que se establece entre la película y los mandamientos que recoge el voto de castidad del movimiento Dogma 95 en el que Los idiotas se incluye. Observaremos cómo la reflexión metacinematográfica en relato y discurso, aun por caminos diferentes, apuntan en un mismo sentido. Por último, nuestra conclusión, amén de evidenciar la convergencia de propósitos entre contenido y forma del film, esbozará, a partir de lo mantenido en nuestro recorrido, un intento de respuesta a las cuestiones que el film propone sobre el papel del espectador y el vínculo que se establece entre cine y realidad.

Resorting to metacinema in those cinemas away from the hegemonic model fosters in the audience

a particular reflexion about their role so as to the film in question. It also makes them wonder about

reality, the cinema world itself, and the links between both of them. This article aims at analysing the

metafilmic and auto-reflexive gestures in the film The Idiots (Dogme #2. Idioterne, Lars von Trier,

1998) contributing to shed light on the film’s stance about the matters mentioned above. In order to

do so, the story will be analysed first, tackling the interaction between the three ontologic levels that

the films depicts. Later on, a reflexion on the discourse of the film will be carried out, having as a

starting point the dialogue between the film itself and the commandments sprung from Dogme 95’s

vote of chastity, the filmmaking movement where The Idiots belongs. We will argue how the

metacinema reflexion in both story and discourse, even if following different paths, point at the very

same direction. Finally, our conclusion, besides demonstrating the convergence in terms of intention

between the content and the structure of the film, will stand as an attempt to answer the questions

that the film suggests about the role of the audience and the link between reality and cinema.
