dc.description.abstract | The Theory of Mind (ToM) is defined as the ability to infer the mental states of other individuals, such as beliefs, intentions or desires, and to use this knowledge to understand and predict other’s behaviors. ToM is believed to be essential for social interactions. This ability has shown to be impaired in people with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), especially those with frontal lesions. The relation between ToM and other cognitive functions has been also investigated. It seems that the executive function (EF) is the most related to ToM, but whether poor ToM reflects an impairment of generic EF functioning or it is a separated cognitive module remains controversial. The main frontal regions involved in ToM processing are medial prefrontal cortex (dorso-and ventromedial) and temporoparietal junction, but temporal lobe, temporal superior sulcus and temporal pole have also their role in ToM. Method: In this study 4 TBI patients (only 1 with frontal lesion) were assessed. Base line was measured by a complete neuropsychological assessment and a verbal task (Faux Pas) and a non-verbal one (Character’s Intention Task) were used to asses ToM. Results: All four showed impaired cognitive functions, but only the patient with frontal lesion had a poor ToM execution. Conclusions: This evidence provides support for the role of the frontal lobe in ToM ability. | ca_CA |
| ca_CA |
