Over the last few decades leaders of companies have found themselves facing new
challenges due to changes that have occurred in the business environment.
Companies work in a turbulent, hostile and competitive environment and this
complicates a leader's job. A leader must work continuously in order to face up to these
constant changes. Consequently company leaders must be more and more competent
in order to guide their employees towards accomplishing the objectives of the
company.
All of this generates great interest among authors trying to find the requisites of a
leader, how they should act and how they should behave. Good business leadership
can lead to the creation of a successful and effective organisation. However, these
studies have moved away from searching for information relating to ways in which
leadership can be harmful for a business consequently causing it to fail.
When searching for information relating to leadership a lot of papers can be found
about how a leader should be and how they should behave, but not many can be found
that explain bad leadership and how this can affect a business. Studies about bad
leadership practise are few and far between, but it should be noted that those that can
be found are recent, from the last few years, and gradually more and more authors are
beginning to discuss bad leadership.
Bad practise in leadership has been called “destructive leadership” or “toxic leadership”
depending on authors. Other terminology such as “ineffective leadership” or “negative
leadership” are also used, but with different nuances. These shall be explained further
on in the project.
This project centers on what is known as destructive leadership and the difference in
relation to destructive behaviour of a leader; the different attitudes employees may take
regarding toxic leadership and a way to measure the repercussions of destructive
leadership in work satisfaction.
In order to demonstrate that destructive leadership is present in businesses and the
relevance of more studies, data, obtained in a study carried out by a number of
authors, shall be explained in order to prove the presence of toxic leadership. For
example, a studying regarding workplace bullying carried out by Zapf (and others) in
2003 showed that between 5 and 10% of workers had experienced bullying in their
workplace at least once. These results can be compared with those of another study
carried out by Namie & Namie in 2000 that showed that 89% of those that had
experienced bullying considered their leader as the main aggressor. Other studies,
such as Hubert and van Veldhoven (2001), found that 11% of the cases in the
Netherlands had experienced destructive leadership; or the study by Aasland,
Skogstad, Notelaers, Nielsen and Einaresen (2010) which took place in Norway where
one third of employees found themselves subject to toxic leadership; and finally, a
4
study carried out in the USA by Tepper (2007) found that 13.6% of workers had been
affected by abusive supervision.
Although not many studies focusing on destructive or toxic leadership have been
carried out and the terms are not common, I believe to have demonstrated, through the
aforementioned studies, that this is a topic to be investigated and further looked into
with the objective of knowing with more certainty what affects it has on employees, how
it affects their work and the workings of the business itself. [-]
