La humanización del espacio: el Hotel Overlook

Abstract

El trabajo que se presenta a continuación versará sobre el papel que tiene el Hotel Overlook dentro de la película The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980). Para definir de forma precisa si la función del Hotel se limita a dar cobijo a la familia Torrance o si, como creemos, su ocupación va más allá de esa idea, se analizarán diversos factores tales como la construcción de espacio fílmico en función de la planificación arquitectónica; el tiempo interno y externo del relato y su articulación; los aspectos visuales más relevantes (la iluminación, la composición simétrica dentro del encuadre, el punto de fuga, el cromatismo, los movimientos de cámara y el tipo de planos utilizados), así como la configuración sonora del film. Además de eso, se estudiará la comunicación dentro de la película y la importancia del concepto de incomunicación.Finalmente se revisará la temporalidad del relato fílmico y su relación con el tiempo externo. Todo ello para concluir reafirmando la idea de que el Hotel Overlook supera la simpleza de lo físico para establecerse como ente enunciador omnisciente.

This essay will approach the role of the Overlook Hotel in the movie The Shining. To precisely define if the function of the Hotel, simply provide shelter for the Torrance family or if, as we believe, the job goes beyond that idea several factors as the construction of filmic space based on architectural planning will be analyzed. Internal and external narrative time articulation; the most important visual aspects as lighting, symmetrical composition, chromaticism, camera movements and type of planes used and the sounds of the film will be discussed. So, will be consider too the communication inside the film and the importance of the concept of confinement. Finally the temporality of the film story and its relationship with the external time will be studied. All this to conclude by reaffirming the idea that the Overlook Hotel exceeds the simplicity of the physical body to establish itself as omniscient enunciador.
