El estilo de Tim Burton: Pastiche e intertextualidad en la creación de un mundo fantástico

Abstract

Este Trabajo Final de Grado tiene como objetivo analizar las características que forman el universo alternativo e insólito de Tim Burton. Se desarrollará mediante un recorrido por diferentes puntos que en suma dieron como resultado a uno de los cineastas que desarrolla un estilo que replantea y lleva al límite algunos esquemas y cánones del cine fantástico. Tim Burton toma influencias claras y directas, desde el goticismo romántico hasta el arte expresionista, corriente artística y vanguardista europea del Siglo XX. Ambos poseen la característica de ser “oscuros” y siniestros, sobre todo el expresionismo. Proponen una actitud antinaturalista que se aleja de la representación mimética de la realidad. Influenciado por el contexto en el que desarrolló su vida y el arte gótico- expresionista, Burton ha creado una mirada característica y distanciada de lo que se da por común, reflejando su propia personalidad en un estilo cinematográfico reconocible en todas sus películas. Todo ello, lleva a Tim Burton a crear una nueva estética muy particular y característica, adaptando sus conocimientos y personalidad a la pantalla. Para establecer las idiosincrasias de su estética se realizará un análisis en torno a dos obras del autor: Vincent (1982) su primer cortometraje y Frankenweenie (2012) película inspirada en su segundo cortometraje con el mismo nombre.

This paper aims to analyse the characteristics of the alternative and unusual world of Tim Burton. It will be developed by taking into consideration various points that resulted in a filmmaker who develops a style that redefines and pushes the limits of some of fantasy films’ schemes and canons. Tim Burton takes clear and direct influences from the romantic Gothicism to the European Expressionist art, an artistic and avant-garde movement of the twentieth century. They both are "dark" and sinister, especially expressionism. They propose an anti-naturalistic attitude away from the mimetic representation of reality. Influenced by the context in which he developed his life and Gothic- Expressionist art, Burton has created an unique look and distanced himself from mainstream representation, reflecting his own personality in a cinematic style recognizable in all his films. All this leads Tim Burton to create a new and very particular aesthetic, adapting his skills and personality to the screen. To set the idiosyncrasies of his aesthetic two analyses of Vincent (1982) and his first short film Frankenweenie (2012) - inspired by his second short film with the same name- will be performed.
