In language impairments field, it has been demonstrated how children with language impairment
show clear problems to understand metaphors, ironic expressions or jokes (Frazier-Norbury, 2005).
However, even though there are existing papers trying to explore those abilities in preschool ages
when humor is presented in a graphic condition (Puche-Navarro, 2004), there are no evidence of
works having done the same kind of study with atypical developing language samples as is the
Specific Language Impairment (SLI) case. Therefore, the aim of this work is to compare SLI children
performance with typical language developing children performance in graphic humor tasks. To achieve this goal, 20 children diagnosed with SLI (average age=70 months) and 21 typically
developing age-matched peers were grouped. After having assessed their linguistic profile, they were
administered an adapted version of Graphic Jokes task (Puche-Navarro, 2005). These analyses showed that both groups had similar performance when they had to choose the picture with ludic content, but they differed when they had to justify their choice (Z=3.11, p=.002). It seems that SLI children are able to understand ludic situations but their low semantic and pragmatic skills prevent them
from justify their choices. [-]
