The terms Function, Behaviour, Structure have been used since the 1990s in order to define
a framework where a system’s functionality can be modelled and represented: the FBS
framework. Within this framework, Function represents the functions of the system, Structure
represents the physical elements, and Behaviour acts relating them both.
Several common deficiencies have been found from the study of several works carried out
on the field of functional design, such as the lack of an integrated approach or a stable
conceptual framework. Likewise, it has been proven that the process of functional design
automation exhibits problems as well with regard to taxonomies or linking to CAI (Computer
Aided Inventing) programs. Moreover, subjectivity from the designer when he interprets the
behaviours need to be considered.
In this article we present a new approach to functional design through FBS framework, able
to solve, a priori, the aforementioned problems. This approach, called B-Cube, proposes a
three dimensional scheme that uses definitions as Behaviours concepts. The key of this
approach is that a Behaviour is not defined with a word or a taxon, which could cause
ambiguity and misinterpretation, but rather defined as a three dimensional vector (X, Y, Z),
set by its characteristics and qualities. [-]

Inventing).
