El término “Teoría de la Mente” fue definido originalmente por Premack y Woodruff (1978) como la
habilidad para adscribir, asignar, atribuir estados mentales a otros y a uno mismo. Estados como creer,
pensar, desear, pretender.
En las interacciones de la vida cotidiana, la mayoría de las personas nos movemos con relativa
facilidad cuando somos capaces de entender que los demás pueden tener deseos, creencias, conocimientos,
en definitiva, estados mentales que nos permiten explicar y predecir sus conductas. Sin embargo,
hay algunas personas que tienen ciertas dificultades en el manejo de estas habilidades de inferencia
mentalista como son, entre otros, los niños con autismo y los niños con Síndrome de Down.
Según diversas investigaciones (Yirmiya y Shulman, 1996; Baron-Cohen, 1989), los autistas carecen
de la habilidad para atribuir estados mentales, mientras que los niños con Síndrome de Down, al
igual que los niños normales, no tienen especial dificultad con las tareas de Teoría de la Mente, aunque
la ejecución no será tan óptima como la esperada en los niños con desarrollo normal. En este trabajo
vamos a plantear una revisión de los trabajos que se han realizado sobre las habilidades en Teoría de
la Mente de los niños con Síndrome de Down. [-]
