Th e life and death of William I of Orange are of great
interest from the point of view of the manufacture, representation
and transmission of power. His life was undoubtedly a key part of the
independence of the northern provinces. His violent death was the
event that made it possible for this self-government to become reality,
providing the cause of independence with a national hero. But, as
William came from a noble family, his rebellion and conversion into the supreme leader of a new country required a powerful propaganda
machine against the Spanish monarchy and in favour of Dutch liberty.
In this study we are going to analyse this propaganda machine basically
created by Maurice to legitimise the struggle for government in Holland,
founded on the rebellion against the Spanish and on personal interests.
We will also particularly study William’s political legacy, through the
symbolism on his tomb. [-]
