En el centro de la investigación se inserta el análisis de una
poco conocida carta de César a Opio y Balbo, recogida en el corpus
epistolario de Cicerón que data del inicio de la Guerra Civil. En ella
se desarrolló por primera vez la idea de la clementia como programa
político del Cesarismo. A través de argumentos extraídos del arsenal
ideológico de la República Romana se sientan las bases de la futura
orientación monárquica del Principado. [-]

In the centre of this investigation stands the analysis of a
little-known letter of Caesar’s to Opius and Balbus, preserved in the
Ciceronian corpus of letters. In this document, dating from the beginning
of the civil war in 49 BC, the idea of clementia as the political programme
of Caesar’s rule is developed for the fi rst time. Th e foundations for the
monarchic orientation of the principate to come are to be found here,
derived from Roman republican concepts. [-]
