At the heart of this study is the figure of the remarkable Castelló
geologist Vicent Sos Baynat as a victim of Francoist repression
due basically to his position as a mason. We will analyse the
position of freemasonry in the Valencian region before the
Civil War and the anti-masonic repression that emerged at the
beginning of the military uprising, taking legislative form in the
Repression of Freemasonry and Communism Law dated 1
March 1940. This Law brought about the creation of a Special
Court which sentenced thousands of masons or former
masons from 1941 almost until the abolition of the Court,
whose powers were transferred to the Court of Public Order in
1964. Before focusing on the figure of Vicent Sos Baynat, we
have given an account of the repression of masons in Castelló.
Finally we have looked at Sos Baynat’s masonic activity,
closely studying the case 737/1944 begun by the TERMC.
This was initially provisionally allowed to lie on file, as Sos
remained in hiding in a terrible internal exile until well into the
1940s, but was reopened in 1958 and ended with Sos Baynat
being sentenced to a shortened prison term of 12 years and a
day, a sentence applied to him in the form of house arrest, with
the convict living under surveillance until 1965 [-]
