Over the years, the poetry of Estellés deals with the subject of death time and again and it does so from a number of different perspectives. On the one hand, there are the collective deaths of war and the post-war period. On the other hand, there is death as an individual phenomenon, where the poet follows a path that runs from the most metaphysical or explicitly religious conceptions to a more laic vision that focuses on more concrete images such as the coffin. ‘Primera soledad’ (First solitude) is a vital step on this journey. It is a collection of poems written in Spanish following the death of his first daughter at the age of three months that remained unpublished for thirty years and offers the result of a poetically elaborated traumatic experience. Without a doubt this was a turning point that led to substantial changes in the poetry of Estellés. [-]
