OBJECTIVES: The objective of this Final Degree Project is to know if the phytohormone Abscisic Acid can be used as an antioxidant nutraceutical tool that helps in maintaining
the oxidative balance of the eye.
DESIGN: Systematic review.
METHODS: All relevant literature found in Pubmed, WOS, SCIELO, SCOPUS and
Cochrane was used: Original studies, written in English and investigating Abscisic Acid in
diseases related to oxidative-type imbalances, and more specifically in eye pathologies.
RESULTS: From the 4 studies that underwent the meta-analysis, it was observed how
Abscisic Acid can be used as a treatment in eye diseases derived from oxidative damage,
such as Retinal angiogenesis, Ischemic retinopathies or Diabetic retinopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: ABA is a phytohormone with antioxidant properties that offers solutions to pathologies which appear as a consequence of the loss of the oxidative balance. There
are ocular pathologies with etiology in oxidative damage: cataracts, glaucoma, liquefaction
of the vitreous, diabetic retinopathy. ABA can be used in diseases derived from ischemic retinopathy and angiogenic pathology of the retina. More studies need to be done to see if it can
also be used in other eye pathologies stemming from conditions where ABA is already used,
such diabetes, and some other inflammatory illnesses. [-]
