The Dark Triad and the Five Factor Model

Abstract

The Dark Triad (DT) is the constellation of three interrelated constructs of personalities comprising Psychopathy, Machiavellianism and Narcissism (Paulhus & Williams, 2002). However, there is controversy in this regard, as some authors argue that this triad is redundant and is composed of two undifferentiated constructs: Psychopathy and Machiavellianism. Therefore, the objectives of the present study are (a) to verify if the relationships between the DT components and the personality dimensions (FFM) of the sample, go in line with the literature and, (b) to establish which specific facets of psychopathy are shared by the rest of the triad. For this purpose, the SRP-III questionnaire was distributed and correlated with the existing data of the same sample in MACH-IV, NPI and NEO-PI-R. The sample was composed of 81 students of Psychology from Jaume I University, 72 women and 9 men between 18-40 years old (mean age=19.73 and SD=3.69). The results obtained follow the line of the literature and evidence (a) the positive and moderate correlation between the constructs of DT, being greater this correlation between Psychopathy and Machiavellianism, (b) that the common factor of personality that underlies to these constructs is the low Agreeableness, (c) that Psychopathy presents a negative and significant relationship with Conscientiousness and Machiavellianism does not have that association, being this the difference between the constructs, (d) and that, the facet of interpersonal manipulation (IMP of SRP-III) is present in the three components of the triad, and is due to the low Agreeableness. We can determine that Psychopathy, Machiavellianism and Narcissism are independent constructs that essentially share the low Agreeableness, and differ in the rest of the personality dimensions, offering a more extensive understanding of the "darkness" of these individuals.

La Triada Oscura (TO) es la constelación de tres consctructos de personaliad interrelacionados que comprende Psicopatía, Maquiavelismo y Narcisismo (Paulhus & Williams, 2002). Sin embargo, existe controversia al respecto, ya que algunos autores plantean que esta triada es redundante y está compuesta por dos constructos indiferenciados: Psicopatía y Maquiavelismo. Por eso, los objetivos del presente estudio son (a) comprobar si las relaciones entre los componentes de la TO y las dimensiones de personalidad (FFM) de la muestra, van en la línea de la literatura y, (b) establecer qué facetas específicas de la psicopatía son compartidas por el resto de la triada. Para ello, se distribuyó y correlacionó el cuestionario SRP-III con los datos existentes de la misma muestra en MACH-IV, NPI y NEO-PI-R, estando ésta formada por 81 estudiantes de Psicología de la Universidad Jaume I, 72 mujeres y 9 hombres entre los 18-40 años (Media de edad=19,73 y DT=3,69). Los resultados obtenidos siguen la línea de la literatura y evidencian (a) la positiva y moderada correlación entre los constructos de la TO, siendo mayor dicha correlación entre Psicopatía y Maquiavelismo, (b) que el factor común de personalidad que subyace a dichos constructos es la baja Amabilidad, (c) que la Psicopatía presenta una relación negativa y significativa con la dimensión de Responsabilidad y el Maquiavelismo no tiene esa asociación, siendo ésta la diferencia entre los constructos, (d) y que, la faceta de manipulación interpersonal (IMP del SRP-III) está presente en los tres componentes de la triada, y se debe a la baja Amabilidad. Podemos determinar que la Psicopatía, Maquiavelismo y Narcisismo son constructos independientes que comparten esencialmente la baja Amabilidad, y se diferencian en el resto de dimensiones de personalidad, ofreciendo una comprensión más extensa de la “oscuridad” de estos individuos.
