Introducción a MEDLINE y a las búsquedas bibliográficas (I). Fundamentos sobre bibliografía médica y búsquedas. MEDLINE en Internet. PubMed y familia

Abstract

Ofrecemos aquí un minicurso introductorio a las búsquedas bibliográficas, basadas en MEDLINE y realizadas a través de PubMed. El trabajo se ha dividido en dos artículos. - En esta primera entrega presentamos MEDLINE, PubMed y las bases de datos y recursos relacionados. Se proporciona información y conceptos básicos sobre el tema general de las búsquedas bibliográficas. - El segundo artículo completará el trabajo aportando una Guía Básica para el usuario de PubMed. Contenidos y objetivos de esta primera parte: Se proporciona una introducción general al tema de las bases de datos de bibliografía médica, revisando los fundamentos metodológicos implicados en las tareas preliminares y fases iniciales de la planificación de una estrategia de búsqueda. El objetivo inicial es conocer qué es MEDLINE, destacando los contenidos que podemos alcanzar consultando PubMed. Se exponen y se destacan las diferencias que presentan las bases de datos, sistemas de recuperación e interfaces en Internet que acompañan a PubMed en los sitios web de la National Library of Medicine (NLM) y el National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Se aporta información comparando accesos y distribuciones de MEDLINE distintas a los recursos nativos de la NLM. Como complemento a estos contenidos principales, se ha incluido en este artículo una introducción a la realización de búsquedas con propósitos específicos. Se analizan algunas herramientas creadas para facilitar estos cometidos: los denominados filtros metodológicos, basándonos en los proporcionados en PubMed ("Clinical Queries" y "Systematic Review"). Otros servicios y recursos de PubMed serán abordados en la segunda parte de este trabajo.

This is a two parts introductory course tackling with the thematic field of medical bibliographic searches based in PubMed MEDLINE. - In this first article we present MEDLINE, PubMed and their related databases. We also introduce the reader to basic concepts of bibliographic searches. Contents and purposes of this first release: We try to present in this work a general approach to the subject of the medical bibliography databases. The basic essentials to outline and design search strategies before build them are presented. It’s the main objective of this first article to help readers to understand MEDLINE, and, principally, the PubMed’s scope and contents. We try to clarify concepts on it, and present also, the related debases, web interfaces and retrieval systems in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). We also overview and comment on distributors of MEDLINE and MEDLINE’s way of access out of the NLM. We briefly compare particularities, advantages or weakness for each one. Beside those basic objectives, we also deal here with the tools available to carry on searches for particulars and specific purposes. In this way the practical utility of some options like the methodological filters (“Clinical Queries” and “Systematic Review” in PubMed), are commented here. Services and tools of PubMed, others than those “quality filters” will be approached in the second article.
