El cartelismo estadounidense y la representación de las mujeres en las guerras mundiales

Abstract

El cartelismo es una herramienta de las artes visuales que surge a finales del siglo XIX como una nueva forma de propaganda y publicidad, y que será utilizado por los estados de los distintos países para transmitir ideas, formar, informar, convencer, persuadir o apelar a los ciudadanos. Con la llegada del nuevo siglo y sus cambios sociales, económicos y políticos, las mujeres estadounidenses, relegadas tradicionalmente al ámbito doméstico, reivindicarán sus derechos, pero no serán escuchadas hasta su intervención en la Primera Guerra Mundial. Estas mujeres serán llamadas por primera vez por su país a la participación bélica y activa para la defensa de su patria, lo que les hará verse a ellas mismas como sujetos capaces de participar en la vida política de la nación. Sin embargo, siempre serán llamadas como sustitutas o auxiliares y solo reconocidas como eso. En este contexto bélico, el cartelismo se conformará como una herramienta clave en la propaganda bélica dirigida a las masas a las cuales representa. Este trabajo pretende analizar los roles de género que los carteles bélicos estadounidenses otorgan a las mujeres en sus representaciones para su participación patriótica en la Primera y la Segunda Guerras Mundiales y su posible relación con los roles de género perpetuados por la historia del arte. Se puede así agrupar, según su rol en la guerra, cuatro categorías diferentes: las mujeres como trabajadoras civiles, las mujeres como trabajadoras en el ejército –donde se incluirá la figura de las enfermeras– las mujeres como víctimas y las mujeres como una amenaza.

Posterism is a tool of the visual arts that emerged at the end of the 19th century as a new form of propaganda and publicity, and that will be used by the states of different countries to convey ideas, form, inform, convince, persuade or appeal to the citizens. With the arrival of the new century and its social, economic and political changes, the new American women, traditionally relegated to the domestic sphere, will claim their rights, but they will not be heard until their intervention in the First World War. These women will be called for the first time by their country to the warlike and active participation for the defense of their homeland, which will make them see themselves as subjects capable of participating in the political life of the nation. However, they will always be called as substitutes or auxiliaries and only recognized as that. In this warlike context, cartelism will be formed as a key tool in the war propaganda directed to the masses it represents. This paper aims to analyze the gender roles that the American war posters attribute to women in their representations for their patriotic participation in the First and Second World Wars and their possible relationship with the gender roles perpetuated by the history of art. Thus, five different categories can be grouped according to their role in the war: women as civilian workers, women as symbols of the ideal of the family, women as workers in the army -where the figure of nurses will be included- women as victims and women as a threat.
