The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (1985) narrates the creation of a totalitarian and
patriarchal society called Gilead, arranged into several social classes whose power variates
depending on their status. At the bottom of the hierarchy in this society are fertile women, called
Handmaids, who find themselves systematically used and abused for their child-bearing abilities
and are treated like objects. Throughout the novel, the author relies heavily on different types of
symbolism to present the main themes through the protagonist’s eyes, such as the oppression of the
women of Gilead and their longing for freedom and envy of other social groups. Especially
significant is Atwood’s use of colours as a narrative tool; in the story, women are forced to wear
robes in one of five different colours (red, blue, green, white, or brown), depending on their role in
society, as the colours help, mainly, to distinguish between the various social groups and to separate
its members. This paper examines how the author plays with the meaning of these colours, as she
will use them to represent, for instance, opposed ideas, or even to create new associations in order
to challenge traditional colour assumptions. Through the analysis of the five main colours present in
the novel, the present study shows how Atwood represents the mistreatment of women in Gilead, as
well as the importance of religion and power dynamics in such a society, among other themes. [-]
