Resistencias de mujeres nobles en el siglo XVII. El éxito de la duquesa de Maqueda: entre un ducado y un matrimonio

Abstract

En el marco social y legislativo de opresión de las mujeres del siglo XVII, la duquesa de Maqueda, doña María de Guadalupe de Lencastre y Cárdenas se eleva como un ejemplo de mujer contra el modelo femenino de su época. Si bien la historiografía se ha encargado ya de destacar la labor cultural y piadosa de la duquesa, en el presente trabajo hemos querido analizar otra de sus muchas facetas. Analizando su documentación privada, la figura de la duquesa se perfila mediante sus modos de resistencia contra la anulación de las mujeres de la Edad Moderna. Durante la lucha mediante pleitos que tuvo que llevar a cabo para recuperar su herencia paterna -el ducado de Aveiro-, doña María de Guadalupe hubo de hacer frente a un gran opositor: su propio marido. Investigamos para ello, a través de la correspondencia de la duquesa, las trabas que tanto éste como otros personajes pusieron a sus fines. De tal forma, que se ponen de manifiesto las herramientas de control y opresión que se intentaron aplicar contra ella, así como los modos de defenderse que utilizó para, finalmente, presentar resistencia a todos ellos y, en cierto sentido, tomar las riendas de su vida. A través de sus cartas queda demostrado que, más allá de su conocimiento de ciertas disciplinas, la duquesa es un gran modelo de mujer de su tiempo, bien por su gran conocimiento de la política y el contexto hispano-portugués de la época, o bien por su consciencia de lo que entrañaban los impedimentos y mecanismos que se utilizaron contra ella.

In the legislative and social framework of the women of seventeenth century, the Duchess of Maqueda, Miss Maria de Guadalupe de Lencastre y Cárdenas rises as an example of a woman against the female model of her time. Although the historiography already took charge of highlighting the cultural and pious work of the Duchess, in the present work we wanted to analyse another of its many facets. By analyzing her private documentation, the figure of the Duchess is outlined by her ways of resistance against the annulment of the women of the Modern Age. During the fight through lawsuits that she had to carry out to recover her paternal inheritance -duchy of Aveiro-, Miss Maria de Guadalupe had to face a great opponent: her own husband. We investigate for it, through the correspondence of the Duchess, the obstacles that he and another characters put to her goals. In such a way, that the tools of control and oppression that were tried to be applied against her are revealed, as well as the ways of defending that she used to, finally, present resistance to all of them and, in a certain sense, take the reins of her life. Through her letters it is demonstrated that, beyond her knowledge of certain disciplines, the duchess is a great woman model of her time, because of her great knowledge of politics and spanish-portuguese context, or because her awareness of what the impediments and mechanisms that were used against her implied.
