Este libro recoge ocho estudios sobre
historia rural publicados por Pau
Viciano entre 1990 y 2013. En
cierto sentido es una continuación de una
recopilación anterior realizada por la
misma editorial (Viciano, 2007).

This book brings together eight studies on rural history published by Pau Viciano between 1990 and 2013. In a way, it is a continuation of a previous compilation by the same publisher (Viciano, 2007), who has gathered a number of articles related, as the subtitle of the book indicates, to the same subject area and geographical scope. Although the seigniory (‘lordship’) constituted the social and territorial frame of reference at the time, in order to be able to characterise the rural low-medieval societies it is also necessary to direct the attention of the reader towards other neighbouring realities. Indeed, the market, the tax system, and indebtedness are the three elements that bring together this compilation, in line with the historiographic renovation that has been taking place in the rural history studies since the 1980s.
Regarding the geographical scope of the book, all the studies focus on the region of La Plana, namely the town of Castelló, whose rich medieval documents are very well known to the author. Except for the first chapter, which presents a comparative study between the different coastal orchards of the Valencian Country (providing the basis to understand the cultivation of sugar canes both in Gandía and Castelló), the remaining seven chapters are the result of research studies based on unpublished sources, six of them about Castelló and one about Borriana. The chronology of the chapters covers the period from the end of the 14th century. [-]
