Don Juan José de Austria: ¿La última esperanza de los Austrias?

Abstract

La figura de Don Juan José de Austria y su papel durante el reinado de su padre, Felipe IV, y posteriormente durante el de su hermanastro, Carlos II, es un tema de interés para un profundo debate historiográfico. Por una parte, se tuvo que enfrentar al estigma de ser un hijo nacido fuera del matrimonio, teniendo que demostrar más que nadie su capacidad para estar al frente del ejército de España en los conflictos bélicos más importantes en los que la Monarquía estuvo inmersa en esa época. Por otro, y tras la muerte de su padre, se convirtió en el cabecilla de la facción de las personas que habían sido excluidas del testamento de Felipe IV incluido él, comenzando así una «guerra abierta», con la regente, Mariana de Austria, y sus dos validos, Nithard y Valenzuela. Además, cuando alcanzó el poder llevó a cabo una serie de reformas con el objetivo de aliviar la presión fiscal y mejorar la situación económica del país, con resultado bien diferenciados.

The figure of don Juan José of Austria and his role during the reign of his father, Philip IV, and later during that of his stepbrother, Charles II, is a topic of interest for a deep historiographical discussion. On the one hand, he faced the stigma of being a child born out of wedlock, having to demostrate more than anyone his ability to be at the forefront of the Spanish army in the most important war conflicts in wich the Monarchy was immersed in that period. On the other, and after the death of his father, he became the head of the faction of the people who had been excluded from Philip IV's will including him, thus beginning an «open war», with the regent Mariana of Austria, and her two privates Nithard and Valenzuela. In addition, when he reached power he carried out a series of reforms with the aim of alleviating the fiscal pressure and improving the economic situation of the country, with well differentiated results.
