Superheroínas: ¿empoderamiento femenino o deseo masculino?

Abstract

El cómic de superhéroes aparece en Estados Unidos en pleno siglo XX, siglo caracterizado por los diferentes conflictos bélicos acontecidos. Una de las funciones de este tipo de cómic fue la de transmitir los estereotipos y roles tradicionales de género que había vigentes en la sociedad norteamericana: el cómic superheroico había nacido en un sistema patriarcal y machista, y esto se ve reflejado en el tratamiento de las historias, pero es más notable en el trato que se da a sus personajes, especialmente a los femeninos. Realmente, no fue hasta la entrada de las mujeres en el mundo laboral, debido a la falta de mano de obra necesaria cuando los hombres debieron dejar sus trabajos para dedicarse a la guerra, que apareció la primera superheroína protagonista de su propio cómic: Wonder Woman. Así, fue partir de ella que se fueron diseñando más superheroínas, las cuales fueron siendo cada vez más independientes y poderosas. Pero también fueron diseñadas con un vestuario más reducido y atributos físicos más exagerados. Es por todo esto que con este trabajo se pretende ver cuál era el papel social en el que la mujer norteamericana se vio encasillada durante el siglo XX y cómo influyó esto en el diseño de los personajes femeninos en el mundo del cómic en sus dos editoriales más importantes como lo son Marvel y DC Comics. Además, se intenta dilucidar si las superheroínas aparecieron como figuras de empoderamiento de la mujer o si fueron creadas para ser un reclamo sexual con el objetivo de atraer al público masculino, a través del deleite y el erotismo.

The superhero comic books appears in the United States in the middle of the 20th century, a century characterized by the different armed conflicts that took place. One of the functions of this type of comic was to transmit the stereotypes and traditional gender roles that were in force in american society: the superheroic comic was born in a patriarchal and macho system, and this is reflected in the treatment of the stories, but it is more notable in the treatment given to its characters, especially women. Really, it wasn't until the entry of women into the world of work, due to the lack of manpower needed when men had to leave their jobs to devote themselves to war, that the first superheroine appeared protagonist of her own comic: Wonder Woman. Thus, it was from her that more superheroines were designed, which became more and more independent and powerful. But they were also designed with smaller costumes and more exaggerated physical attributes. It is for all these reasons that this work aims to see what was the social role in which American women were pigeonholed during the twentieth century and how this influenced the design of female characters in the world of comics in their two most important editorials such as Marvel and DC Comics. In addition, it is tried to elucidate if the superheroines appeared as figures of empowerment of the woman or if they were created to be a sexual claim with the objective of attracting the masculine public, through the delight and the eroticism.
