There are certain topics which are capable of causing uproar on society.
Therefore, to study the news coverage made about them by mass media is
interesting. One of the topics that upsets citizenship the most is that dealing
with the scientific-health field. This is the reason why these issues should be
treated with the greatest journalistic accuracy, in order to avoid, as far as
possible, bringing about collective fear.
The aim of this research is to study the journalistic processing given to a recent
issue comprised in this field: the 2013 horse-meat issue. To do this, a
quantitative and qualitative methodology of the informative content will be
applied, the latter through the framing theory. The example is centered on three
important Spanish newspapers (El País, El Mundo and ABC) and takes on a
representative period so that the whole topic is covered, taking up a total of
twelve days. The results suggest that mass media hasn’t aroused a climate of
social alarm and that the worry that may have arisen among citizenship due to
this phenomena is fairly equivalent to the real risk of the point. [-]
