Background
:
According to cognitive models, clinical dysmorphic preoccupations
inherent in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are the result of misinterpretations of
common thoughts about
the body appearance and the use of counterproductive
strategies. Maladaptive dysmorphic beliefs increase the likelihood of such
misinterpretations. There is an increasing literature which claims the usefulness of
mobile apps in order to foster cognitive ch
ange.
Aim
:
To assess
the effectiveness of a novel mobile app
on
a cognitive training exercise
(GGBI), designed to challenge BDD
-
related beliefs.
Method
:
124
participants of non
-
clinical sample
were randomized to thee experimental
(EG) or control (CG) grou
p to
start the randomized controlled trial.
They were asked to
complete the evaluation in Time 1 and Time 2. Of these, 96 performed the T1
evaluation and 70 participants completed the T2 evaluation too (45 of the EG and 25 of
CG). The
EG
was
instructed to
complete a daily
three
-
minute
-
long training
for 16 days
between pre
-
post application use.
Results:
No significant differences in Time 1 were found between non
-
completers and
completers of pre
-
and post
-
training measures, and
neither
between EG and CG
.
Repeated
-
measures MANOVA showed a significant increase
in self
-
esteem
and a
significant decrease in depression
symptoms and BDD
-
beliefs
between
the pre
-
and
post
-
use of the App in the EG.
CG showed no change.
S
tatistical analysis
revealed
significant interactions of Time x Group on
BDD
beliefs and self
-
esteem.
Conclusions:
The GGBI App is useful for reducing
those
beliefs related to TDC. [-]

Antecedentes:
