Introduction:
Ethanol is the most consumed drug world
wide
. It produces behavioral
changes in a chronic manner
and when acute administered. It has been show
n
that some
of
these changes are modulated by
cellular
Ca
2+
through different intracellular pathways.
Objective:
The purpose of this review is to
study
the
role of
Ca
2+
dependent
molecular
mechanisms
in the behavioral effects produced by ethanol.
Methodology:
In this review,
29
articles
we
re included
from the last 10 years. A search was made in three databases:
Pubmed, Scopus and Epistemonikos. The combination of terms used was:
“Calcium”,
“Ethanol”, “Addiction”, “Behavior”, “PKA”, “PKC”, “Mitochondria”, “Endop
lasmic Reticulum”,
“
Calcium pathway ”,“ Acidic Stores ”,“ Adenylyl Cyclase ”,“ Calcium channels ”,“ Central
nervous system
”
and
“
NMDA
receptors”. The studies selected are based in the animal
models.
Results:
Ethanol
is able to elicit different
behavioral changes that include loc
omotor
activity stimulation, loss of righting reflex,
anxiety
related behavior, place preference and
ethanol
intake. A
ll of this ethanol
-
induced behavior can be modulated by different
Ca
2+
manipulations.
Conclusions:
Man
ipulation of cellular C
a
2+
induces behavioral changes
through
a variety of mechanisms including Ca
2+
-
dependent channels,
especially
L
-
type,
CaM, s
ome AC
and PKA.
It is important to remark that i
ntracellular
Ca
2+
plays a more
signifi
cant role in the behavio
ral changes elicited by ethanol. [-]

Introducción
: El
etan
palabras: “Calcium”, “Ethanol”, “Addiction”, “Behavior”, “PKA”, “PKC”, “Mitochondria”,
“Endoplasmic Reticulum”, “Calci
um pathway”, “Acidic Stores”, “Adenylyl Cyclase”, “Calcium
channels”, “Central nervous system” y “NMDA receptors”.
Los estudios elegidos han sido
rea
lizados en modelo animal
.
Resultados:
El etanol produce cambios conductuales que
incluyen una estimulación
en la actividad locomotora y un aumento de la pérdida del reflejo
de enderezamiento
.
A
demás
,
su consumo produce ansiedad y conductas depresivas
y
estimula la pref
erencia de lugar condicionada
. Todos estos parámetros se ven mo
di
ficados
cuando se modula el
Ca
2+
antes de la ingesta de etanol.
Conclusiones:
El Ca
2+
modula la
conducta mediante diversos mecanismos que incluyen los canales dependientes de Ca
2+
, en
especial lo
s tipo L,
la CaM
,
diversas AC
y la PKA. El Ca
2+
intracelular es el más involucrado
en la
modulación de la conducta. [-]
