Learning a second or foreign language can either be a rewarding or an awful experience. This may be caused by affective factors that influence learners in their learning process. One of the most important individual factors is motivation since it plays a major role in language acquisition and it is considered the most influential variable in the success or failure in second language learning. Therefore, in this paper we provide a general overview on literature focused on motivation, the most relevant theories and contributions to L2 motivation research, and the types of motivation regarding internal and external factors. In order to put theory into practice and demonstrate the validity of the theories, one of the main issues related to motivation is how it can be measured. In an attempt to answer this question, scholars have developed questionnaires which may be helpful for teachers to develop different motivational strategies depending on the results. Therefore, the most cited questionnaires on how to measure, enhance and maintain motivation are presented. Motivation has to be taken into account because there is no doubt that without motivation language achievement and language proficiency cannot happen. [-]
