This project is divided in five main chapters. First chapter describes the current
situation of the refrigeration sector. In 2015 the F-gas regulation came into effect. This
regulation introduces, among other restrictions, the prohibition of those systems that
in commercial refrigeration and working in direct expansion use fluids whose GWP
overcomes 150. In this way, different solutions have been proposed. The one which
has been chosen is the proposition of transforming the DX system into an IX system.
The transformation into an IX system necessarily implies a reduction of the efficiency
of the original cycle. This fact occurs because of the necessity of using a recirculating
pump and a heat exchanger (in contact with a secondary fluid). The system of
reference consists in a vapor-compression system refrigeration cycle with a hightemperature service working with R134a in DX and a low-temperature service working
with CO2 in DX. Taking into account that the CO2 has a unitary GWP, the aim of this
project is only focused on finding the best transformation (minimizing the efficiency
reduction) of the high-temperature service.
In this manner, an EES simulation has been carried out in the theoretical approach.
Different values of COP have been obtained using different refrigerants (in the HT
cycle) in indirect expansion and they have been compared with the reference. These
refrigerants are the R134a itself, the R152a, the R32, the R290, the R1270, the R1234ze
and the R1234yf. After the analysis of the results the R32 and R1234yf have been
dismissed because of their low COP values.
System of reference has been recreated in the G.I.T. workshop of Universitat Jaume I,
then the refrigerants that have presented the best results in theoretical approach have
been tested (in IX) in this system. Some parameters have been obtained such as the
temperatures of evaporation, condensation or discharge; the cascade heat exchanger
efficiency; the electrical consumption; the running time of the compressors; the global
COP of the system; and the total energy consumed in each test. After this experimental
approach and the consequent comparison with the system of reference, it has been
concluded that the best refrigerant for replacing the R134a-DX is the R152a-IX. Using
this configuration, the energy consumption of the system increases as expected, but
only 4,5%.
Considering that the IX systems provoke less fugitive emissions of refrigerant, and
therefore have a lower maintenance cost, in the 4th chapter of this project (economical
approach) the operative cost of the solution has been calculated and compared to the
respective referential cost. In this way, it has been checked that the transformation
cost it will be depreciated in less than 15 years.
Finally, it is remarkable that the chosen solution is more respectful with the
environment. In the 5th chapter (environmental approach) the tones of CO2 eq emitted
by the solution and by the reference have been calculated, which has demonstrated
that they are reduced 35%. [-]
