The digital era has produced the establishment of new communicative dynamics in society.
Social networks have been converted in a space in which people consume information and
also produces it. This is known as a revolution of the communication in which any actor can
participate by expressing in a digital way its opinion. This freedom and change of the traditional
communication model has produced, that social networks like Twitter have been transformed
into an essential tool for the political communication, and also in the communicative
base of social and political movements. This investigation has the objective of analyzing the
way citizens use Twitter during relevant political events and of a big interest in the society.
The study object is the Catalan referendum celebrated the 1st of October of 2017.
The investigation has been based on the analysis of 1500 tweets published during the Catalan
referendum and that contain the hashtag #1Oct. For it, it has been used a methodology
based on a quantitative analysis, divided into two groups: how do citizens use Twitter’s tools,
and about what themes and with what functions do users publish on Twitter. The results
reflect that citizens use this social network in a critical and demanding way about political
issues, and like a space of resistance against the pressure done by the actors that have the
power. In addition, they indicate that their attention is focused on reinforcing ideas and expressing
their rejection towards opposites. [-]
