This paper evaluates some of the determinants of the level of exports in the long and short-term in Spain after explaining the importance of exports for economic growth and making a description of the variables used for the estimation. Two models are estimated in the long-term and two in the short-term. The variables used in the long-term models are the effective real exchange rate and external demand with a small variation in the second model substituting the variable real exchange rate for the variable real exchange rate based on unit labour costs. Meanwhile, in the short-term models the variables used
are the effective real exchange rate, external and domestic demand and the explained variable lagged one period.
The paper concludes that in the long-term models, all the variables are significant, while in the short-term models, external and domestic demand they are the unique significant variables. [-]
