BSTRACT
Introduction: i
mmunonutrition
consist on providing the body with nutrients that will en
c
hance
the functioning of the immune system and will prevent protein loss by catabolism, produced by
the metabolic stress generated in some specific physiological situations such as major surgeries.
The nutrients capable of providing pharmacological effects are arginine, glutamine, w
-
3 acids
and RNA.
O
bjective
s:
to
evaluate the available evidence on the effectiveness of immunonutrition
on
postoperative complications; determining if it can reduce the rate of surgical infections; to
determine the time and the duration of the immunonutrition treatment to enhance its
effectiveness. Finally, to describe how nutrients may affect the immune re
sponse.
Methods: an integrative review of the avalaible evidence in Pubmed, Proquest y CINAHL was
performed.
Results: the initial search resulted in 128 studies. After discarding the studies that were not
focused in surgery and immunonutrition, 24 studies
were finally selected
.
Conclusions
:
i
mmunonutrition has been shown to improve the results of postoperative
complications, both infectious and non
-
infectio
us, and the hospital length of stay
. Surgical
infections have been diminished in patients who ingest
immunonutrition. The optimal period to
boost its effectiveness is perioperative
period
, 5 or 7 days before and in the immediate
postoperative period until 5 or 7 days after surgery. The more studied and effective are arginine,
w
-
3 acids and RNA or arginine
, glutamine and w
-
3 acids. [-]

vayan a ayudarlo

; d
eterminando si
puede reducir la tasa de i
n
fecciones del sitio
quirúrgico;
determinar
antes y
en el postoperatorio inmediato
hasta 5 o 7 días después de la cirugía. Las fórmulas más
estudiadas y con mejores resultados son argi
nina, ácidos w
-
3 y RNA o arginina, glutamina
y
ácidos w
