The present Final Degree Project focuses on the family, an institution of vital importance for the
organization of human society, both in the past and at present. My main objective is not to perform
a general study on the family but to identify both the changes and continuities experienced by the
pre-Islamic family of the Arabian Peninsula with the arrival of Islam and thus see their influence in
the Andalusian society, particularly in the period encompassing the reign of the Umayyad dynasty
(756-1031), Taifas and North African domination (1031-1212). My hypothesis is that the formation
of the Andalusian families was affected by the legislation made in the Islamic Corpus and by the
family structure of the pre-Islamic society of Arabia, in addition to possessing its intrinsic
characteristics. [-]
