In the past decades, drugs of abuse (DOAS) have been widely consumed in Europe. Most of these
drugs are illegal, and their consumption is forbidden. This has led to the increase use of new
psychoactive substances (NPS), developed to try to evade the law and commonly known as
“legal highs”. NPS market is continuously changing to develop new substances to replace those
that are banned. Detection and identification of NPS is an analytical challenge due to the
continuous changes in production and quick distribution.
The analysis of NPS in this work has been performed with the application of ultra-high
performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry
with an hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass analyser (QTOF MS) with electrospray ionization
(ESI). The accurate mass full-spectra acquisition data provided by QTOF MS has allowed a
reliable identification of the compounds of interest, even if reference standards are not
available.
Twelve urine samples were analyzed and two databases were used to detect and identify the
NPS and DOAS in the samples. [-]
