Leukemia is a very particular case of illness, where a donor can greatly improve the
life expectancy of the patients. According to Kater et al. (2014) promotions campaigns
are necessary for recruiting potential donors and thus to increase the likelihood that a
leukemia patient will find a compatible marrow for a successful treatment of her disease.
Since the creation of the Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO from the Spanish name)
more than 25 years ago (by the Josep Carreras Foundation and the collaboration of the
Spanish Ministry of Health), Spain stands as one of the countries where these donations
have a more pronounced trend. Recently, this growth has been accentuated following the
approval of the National Bone Marrow Plan in 2013. The aim of this paper is to analyze to
what extent a greater government intervention, in terms of health expenditure and/or the
establishment of new information centers, influences the number of donors and hence
the probability of potential matches for a bone marrow transplant. With this purpose, we
estimate a Poisson model using panel data for the Spanish Autonomous Communities
during the period 2010-2015. In this estimation, we have also taking into consideration
other factors that may influence marrow donations, such as education and per capita
income. Our findings show a positive and significant effect of the health expenditure
on the number of donations across communities. However, the effect of opening a new
information center is negative. This is probably because the general population uses
other media in order to get information about bone marrow donations. We also find a
positive influence of GDP and education per capita. [-]
