For exploratory purposes, and for implementing new functions in an existent tool, iXblue's society
(Sonar Division) in La Ciotat has proposed development lines for the SeapiX, a multi-beam sounder with
Mills Cross structure.
Fisher's experience and mastery is no longer enough to ensure success in this highly competitive
industry. They use each year new tools in order to obtain all the information about the medium, and
they are keen on supplementary data concerning their business. The SeapiX o ers a wide range of
functions; such as high resolution bathymetry, biomass analysis or seabed composition. Between these
new applications, we nd the aim of this project; speed detection by means of the Doppler e ect in
acoustic signals. Underwater object speed is a relevant information for shers; velocity and direction of
a school of sh, or water current speed. Furthermore, emitter's speed referenced to the seabed helps on
the process of localization of the ship, by comparison with GPS data.
By means of this document we will explore di erent existent possibilities to estimate speed in the
mentioned applications and validate them taking into account product and medium limitations. Finally,
we will state the optimal methods for the applications
This project demands knowledge on various engineering domains; underwater acoustics; antenna
processing and telecommunications for adapted beamforming processes, statistics and probability to nd
proper estimators depending on the received information, and signal and image processing to connect
received data and estimations.
The ultimate goal of the project is to adapt the processing code in order to introduce it into the
Internal Computation Unit of the SeapiX, and e ectuate the applications in real time. [-]
