Nowadays alcohol is one of the most consumed and accepted psychoactive substances. It ́s
important to address this issue because of the high level of consumption around the world and its
consequences on people and society. There are different intracellular cascades responsible for the
changes observed in the synaptic function and for their role as molecular targets of ethanol. One
of the most known is cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) which is considered to play a key
role in the observed neurobehavioral responses of ethanol consumption. Results obtained from
different investigations showed that a pre-treatment with W7 reduced in a dose-dependent manner
the locomotor stimulation produced by ethanol intake and that pre-treatment with diltiazem or
verapamil prevented locomotor stimulation with no effect upon locomotor suppression produced
by ethanol. These results demonstrated that pre- treatment with W7 decreased the ethanol-induced
stimulating effects, so it is assumed that CaM plays an important role in the ethanol-induced
behavioral actions. Finally, the pre-treatment with diltiazem or verapimil decreased the ethanolinduced
locomotor stimulation suggesting that L-type calcium channels undertake an important
role in the behavioral effects produced by ethanol. [-]
