The learning of English as a foreign language is one of the fields of education which has been most
benefited from the technological advance and the emergence of new devices and virtual sites. The
utilisation of ICTs for the teaching and learning of English has been investigated and evaluated, proving
that its interactive and boundless nature contribute positively to the teaching and learning process.
Some of the latest incorporations to this technologic area are platforms whose main objective is the
communication and the distribution of information, textual or audio-visual, between its members. These
sites are the social networks, which, in the same way, could contribute to the learning of the English
language.
Regarding social networks, Facebook can be labelled as the most popular among the society, due to its
number of users in the world. Facebook, unlike other networks, is a platform which contributes to the
communication of its members by means of posts and commentaries. Bearing this in mind, it is possible to
observe that it may be a suitable instrument for the teaching and learning of English, since the
interactions between users of this network are achieved, principally, by means of the utilisation of the
language.
Thus, the social network Facebook is presented as an innovative instrument for the development of the
writing abilities, and as a tool which is completely familiar to the students with whom it is employed. One
of the possibilities which this platform offers is the creation of a community, where, all the users who
belong to it, have the same purposes. Therefore, the creation of a Facebook community for the practise of
the writing skills, where the teacher and the students interact and share information with the aim of
improving and learning English, is a valuable and encouraging option which must also be analysed [-]
