La Orden Tercera de San Francisco de Vila-real entre 1746 y 1815

Abstract

Aunque se trate de formas de asociación de origen medieval, las cofradías fueron instituciones religioso-populares abundantes en el Antiguo Régimen hispánico. De hecho, un buen número de estas hermandades en la provincia de Castelló fueron fundadas en la Edad Moderna, período en el que encontraron un especial auge. Su pervivencia continuó asentándose sobre el mismo fondo religioso en que se establece su espiritualidad, compuesta por los elementos de penitencia, plegaria, limosna y lo comunitario. En este trabajo se aborda una visión general de la Orden Tercera franciscana de la población de Vila-real, entre mitad del siglo XVIII y el final de la Guerra de la Independencia. Esta congregación compuesta por individuos seglares desde su origen en el siglo XVI, se adscribía al Convento de san Francisco de la misma población. Así, enmarcando esta agrupación en el contexto de la Vila-real de su época, y en las propias circunstancias de las cofradías en la Modernidad, la investigación se propone extraer información relativa a su funcionamiento, patrimonio, actividades, mentalidades y personajes que la formaron. En éste último aspecto de los protagonistas, el texto se enfoca únicamente en figuras femeninas, para ofrecer una lectura menos frecuente, la de los estudios de género, sobre quiénes componían la congregación. Como aspecto destacado, sobresale el inédito vínculo con la hermandad de una duquesa y princesa italiana, Faustina Mattei Orsini (†1777), la intitulada duquesa de Paganica y princesa de Santa Cruz, quien ejerció en esta cofradía los altos cargos femeninos de Ministra y Coadjutora, en 1760 y 1761 respectivamente.

Although the religious brotherhoods are forms of association of medieval origin, they were abundant religious-popular institutions in the Old Hispanic Regime. In fact, a good number of these brotherhoods in the Spanish province of Castelló were founded in the Modern Age, period in which they found a special boom. Their survival continued based on the same religious background in which their spirituality were established, composed of the elements of penance, prayer, alms and community. In this work it is stated an overview of the Third Franciscan Order of Vila-real, between the middle of the eighteenth century and the end of the War of Independence. This congregation composed of secular individuals from its origin in the sixteenth century, was attached to the Convent of St. Francisco, in the same population. Thus, in the context of the Vila-real of his time, and in the circumstances of the Spanish cofradías in Modernity, this research aims to extract information about its functioning, heritage, activities, mentalities and people that formed it. In this last aspect of the protagonists, the text focuses only on female figures, to offer a less frequent reading (that is the gender studies), about who was in the congregation. As an outstanding feature, the work studies the link with the brotherhood of an Italian duchess and princess, Faustina Mattei Orsini († 1777), the so-called Duchess of Paganica and Princess of Santa Cruz. She exercised there the high female positions of Minister and Coadjutora, in 1760 and 1761 respectively.
