The aim of this project is to present the current situation of teaching literature in
secondary schools as well as giving reasons for including literature into the curriculums.
Some of the benefits of teaching literature as well as the disadvantages found by some
scholars will be displayed in this project. The need to find real material which raises an
emotional response is crucial when teaching literature. As a result, the novel
Frankenstein will be presented in order to attract the learners’ attention towards reading.
A didactic unit is created and part of it is used in class to show the students’ interest in
literature and whether they believe it is useful for them or not. The project concludes
with a summary of the results obtained and some current reasons for teaching literature
in an ESL classroom. The final outcome confirms the initial theory that literature should
not be omitted from English classes in secondary schools. [-]
